Heritage red fitted wardrobes with antique brass handles, Arnos Grove, London

THE PIECE

The Wardrobes

A pair of freestanding-proportion fitted wardrobes, each running floor to ceiling and dressed in a deep heritage red with a satin finish. The two units occupy opposite sides of the room — one anchored beside a bay window, the other set against the far wall — creating a symmetry that gives the bedroom a considered, complete quality.

The door configuration follows a classic four-panel arrangement across two leaves, with a horizontal rail dividing upper and lower sections. Brass bar handles, slim and vertical, are the only interruption to the expanse of painted surface. At the base of each unit, a full-width drawer sits flush beneath the doors, finished in the same red throughout — including the drawer interior.

The carcasses are white internally, providing contrast when the doors are open and a clean backdrop for the pull-out hanging rail and fixed shelf within.

IN CONTEXT

Colour as Architecture

Set against the pale plaster walls and the white-painted cornicing of an Arnos Grove Victorian bedroom, the red reads less as a decorative choice and more as a structural one. The two wardrobes frame the room rather than furnish it — their height and depth giving them the presence of built elements rather than additions.

The period detail of the room works in the wardrobes’ favour. The cornice profile, the sash windows, and the proportions of the space share a register with the classical panelling of the doors. The brass handles hold the line between the two eras without forcing the point.

When the room is dressed — oak floor, a Persian rug, a framed print between the two units — the red settles into something quieter than it first appears. It anchors the room rather than dominating it.
