Dusty blue fitted library unit and home office joinery, Chelsea Creek, London

THE PIECE

The Library

A fitted library and display unit running the length of one wall, painted in a soft dusty blue and shelved in warm mahogany. The proportions are drawn from the room itself — full-height carcasses framing the central cabinet, open shelves on either side, an integrated desk worked into the lower run.

At the centre, a glazed display cabinet with a hand-detailed cross-mullion door frames the city view beyond — turning what could be a window obstruction into a deliberate design moment. The dusty blue softens the weight of the joinery against the pale walls; the mahogany carries warmth into the shelves and the desk surface. A concealed cove of warm-white LED lighting washes the back of each bay, lifting the piece in low light.

IN CONTEXT

A Room within a Room

Set against the herringbone parquet and the room’s full-height windows, the library reads less as a piece of furniture and more as an architectural element — proportioned to the wall it occupies, finished to sit alongside the existing detailing of the apartment. The dining chairs in the foreground give the piece scale; the city view beyond gives it context. This is joinery designed to belong rather than to perform.
