In the early 90s I was studying interior design, hoping that it can be my way out of our family workshop where my father wanted me to continue his activities.
Not that I didn't like carpentry, I could say the opposite but somehow I was missing inspiration in that stage.
After finishing school I was lucky to join a large and well established workshop giving me a very early opportunity to create and produce my own designs mostly for private houses, hotels, shops even monasteries and churches but still I wasn't satisfied enough with how my work was progressing.
Totally by chance one day I met my father's competitor. His work reputation and knowledge were far beyond any other's in the country, producing top quality doors and bespoke furniture for 4 decades.
He had just stopped his business activities at that time but he welcomed me at his workshop and for 6 years we were working together on a daily basis.
He passed his knowledge, spirit and secrets of the job to me, that no one else could know or even think of.
Today, after 3 decades of personal experience I am grateful to my father George Markou who encouraged me to continue our wonderful job and to Athanasios Mermigas who gave me the knowledge and the ability to produce faster, more accurately and to combine diversity with quality in a way that makes our work different from any other.
My father always wanted me to focus on production of doors and windows. However for me it was totally the opposite.
Making a piece of furniture was a way to be creative and express myself.
When my first creations were installed, he encouraged me to continue my way and do both!
He specialised in designing and producing rounded frames, mouldings and architraves.
A fabulous wood machinist who has always been focused on details!
He often remarked, "In the beginning, many deemed my services costly, but in the end, they discovered just how fortunate they were to have chosen me."
Without a doubt, he remained one of the most gifted and devoted individuals in the fields of carpentry and design throughout his entire life.
