Oak Bookcase & Corner Desk in Westminster
An unusually shaped bedroom becomes a place to read, study and create, with oak-veneered joinery made around the room.
The commission
An awkward corner, put to work.
Markou Design London designed and installed this bespoke oak-veneered bookcase and corner desk for a children's bedroom in Westminster, Central London. Made to suit the room's unusual shape, the fitted composition combines a study surface, tall open shelving and compact storage in a modern, elegant design.
Made for the room
How does the design maximise the space?
The desk follows the corner and meets a tall bookcase beside the window, bringing a work surface and vertical storage into one fitted arrangement. Making the furniture to the room's dimensions allows the unusual layout to become part of the design.
The open knee space keeps the desk usable, while the shelving provides room for books and display without introducing a separate freestanding bookcase.
Useful details
Small storage, carefully considered.
A shallow pull-out drawer sits beneath the desktop, with a drop-front compartment and small open cubbies above it. Purple-toned interiors add a quiet contrast to the natural oak grain, while rounded upright ends soften the smaller shelving unit.
